Think about an ancient city still standing after 2 millenniums. Built over Pamukkale, there are many spots to visit in this ancient Roman city. Domitian and Frontinus gates, Amphitheater, Necropolis are some noteworthy places of Hierapolis.
Dating back to 2nd century BC, Hierapolis was a settlement which was often visited for health purposes. Hot springs of Pamukkale were the main attraction. Also the city is considered Holy, because St. Philip (Philip The Apostle) lived his last years there and was martyred. On top of the hill over Hierapolis stands Martyrium of St. Philip which dates back to 5th century.
A newly found inscription indicates "of the holy and glorious apostle and theologian Philip" |
